AIM
 
The main aim of the training course is to provide participants knowledge in the application of UPLC-MS/MS technique in targeted analysis of contaminants and pharmaceutical compounds in food and the environment.
 
DESCRIPTION
 
The training course is organized within FP7 project CEFSER, GA no. 229629, coordinated by the Faculty of Technology, University of Novi Sad, Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia. CEFSER is strongly linked with excellent research centers such as: CHIRON AS from Norway, Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije University (VU) from the Netherlands, the Spanish Instituto de Investigaciones Quimicas y Ambientales from Barcelona (IIQAB-CSIC), and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) from Prague, Czech Republic. The CEFSER coordinator and the representatives of the CEFSER supporting partners will take a part in this training course as key lecturers. They have an outstanding expertise in the advanced analysis of the contaminants and pharmaceuticals in food and environmental matrices.
 
The key lecturers are:
 
Prof. Dr. Biljana Škrbić: significant experience in coordination and leadership of research projects at both national and international level with strong background in food quality and safety, environmental impacts on food chain, environmental pollution and protection, chemometrics, etc.; founder and head of the Laboratory for Chemical Contaminants in the Environment and Food at FT; coordinator of FP7 project 'CEFSER" GA no. 229629, scored with 15/15; expert evaluator of the projects submitted to the calls of FP7-KBBE Theme 2 programme, FP7-IRSES People programme, the Serbian Ministry for Science, SEE-ERA.NET FP6 project, and Slovak Research and Development Agency; peer-reviewer in dozen prestigious international scientific journals (e.g. J. Chromatogr., Environ. Res., Chem. Intell. Lab. Syst., J. Chem. Inf. Comp. Sci., Environment Int., J. Hazard. Mat., Soil Sed. Contam., etc.); She was Guest Editor of Central European Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Editor in Chief of national journal Acta Periodica Technologica; she is member of Editorial Board of Central European Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; she is the president of the Scientific Council of Association of Environmental Health and Protection of Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa (DKMT) Euroregion, Szeged, Hungary, 2009-2010 and member of Balkan Environmental Association (B.EN.A); References: 9 books, 338 scientific papers and presentations - 65 from the SCI list; invited author of the chapter “Refinery fires: Environmental Issues” in Encyclopedia of Petroleum Sciences and Engineering, Marcel Dekker, New York, 2009.
 
Prof. Dr. Jana Hajšlová: full professor and a head of Accredited Laboratory for analysis of food and environmental contaminants, toxicants and biologically active compounds at the Department of Food Chemistry and Analysis at ICT; her current teaching/supervision responsibilities are within courses on basic principles of food analysis, chemical food safety and organic trace analysis. Her research interests focus on the fate of contaminants and toxicants in food chains and issues related to the implementation of novel strategies for their analysis. Her international memberships are prestigious: program committee “Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology” EU 7 th Framework program, Advisory Group ”Food Quality and Safety”, EU 6 th Framework program, EU Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks, SCENIHR (Health & Consumer Protection DG), member of International Editorial Board-Journal of Food Additives and Contaminants, WHO National contact point for Global Environmental Monitoring Programme (GEMS/Food EURO). Prof. J. Hajšlová has participated in many international research projects, e.g. CONffIDENCE, TRUEFOOD, BIOCOP, TRACE, HEATOX, FIRE, COST actions 629, 924, 926, 927, 636, etc. She has published widely on organic contaminants and food.
 
Prof. Dr. Mira Petrović: Since 1999 Research scientist at the Department of Environmental Chemistry, IIQAB-CSIC, Barcelona, Spain (ICREA Research Professor since 2006). 1995 Ph.D. in Chemistry, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb , Croatia . She was involved in 4 FP EU funded project SANDRINE, PRISTINE; 5 th FP EU funded projects EXPRESS-IMMUNOTECH and P-THREE on the analysis of surfactants and related endocrine disruptors. She was also in charge at CSIC of the thematic network SEDNET and the accompanying measure SOWA, and project manager of EMCO (STREP coordinated by CSIC) funded within the INCO-WBC. Currently, she is Project Manager of the 6FP EU funded project INNOVA-MED (Coordinated by CSIC), and at CSIC project manager for coordination action NORMAN and Integrated project AQUATERRA, where she is the leader of the subproject MONITOR. Her main expertise is in the field of analytical environmental chemistry, specifically analysis of organic micropollutants and study of their fate and behaviour in aquatic systems and during wastewater and drinking water treatment. She edited 3 books on emerging contaminants, published over 80 scientific papers in journals of SCI and 17 book chapters (Number of cites: 1138; Hirsch index 21).
 
Dr. Jon E. Johansen: Chair and Director of new products strategies at Chiron AS. Ph.D. in the field of natural products synthesis and structure elucidation at the Norwegian Institute of Technology 1976, Research fellowships during 1976-1980 at University of California, Berkeley and ETH, Zürich. Research Scientist at SINTEF, Trondheim 1980-1983 and established Chiron in 1984. Chiron AS has a for a long time been working on the synthesis of standards for environmental pollutants like PCFs, PBDEs, PCBs, PAHs etc. and the company is in the forefront in these fields. Several publications in the field of environmental chemistry. Project coordinator for an EU-project on PCB synthesis (Marie Curie Host Fellowship contract, 2003-2006), and partner project leader in the EU-project COMICS (2007-2009). Chair for the 21st International Symposium for Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (ISPAC 21), Trondheim, 2007.
 
The training will be divided into theoretical and practical part. Before the start of training course, trainees will receive handouts (papers, lectures, etc.) to provide them preliminary information about the scope of the training. Each course section is accompanied by exercises in small group (5-6 people) during which the concepts are put into practice.
 
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
 
One of the main challenges in front of CEFSER is to effectively distribute gained information and knowledge on the recent findings and advances in the analysis of contaminants in food and the environment to a variety of targeted audiences in the whole Balkan area and EU as well. In order to motivate scientists from Western Balkan Countries to participate in the training course, few grants will be available for the participants outside CEFSER. Selected number of candidates from all WBCs with the most successful applications (CVs and brief description of the research project or area of work and motivation for course participation written on maximum 1 page (please find the Application form here) will be granted.
The grant will cover the cheapest available ticket for travelling to the course and the average accommodation rates. The maximum grant is 300 euro. Only upon the submission of the original tickets and receipts to the course organizer (Prof. B. Škrbić, Faculty of Technology, University of Novi Sad), the reimbursement of costs will be made up to the maximum grant amount.
The course will be aimed at laboratory managers and practitioners in analytical laboratories from Western Balkan Countries (WBCs) who are involved in the analysis of chemical contaminants and pharamaceuticals in food and the environment with at least basic knowledge in analytical chromatographic techniques and ability to discuss and interact in English. Besides the granted ones, all other interested will be allowed to attend the course on their own expenses after completing the application form and sending it to the organizer.
 
VENUE
 
The training course will be organized at the Faculty of Technology, University of Novi Sad, Bulevar cara Lazara 1, 21000 Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia.

ACCOMMODATION/TRANSFERS
 
Accommodation for the granted applicants will be made by the Faculty of Technology in a hotel close by. Transfer from the station/airport to the hotel upon arrival and vice versa is at own convenience of the course participants, as well as the transfer from the hotel to the course venue. The detailed information on how to get to the course venue will be provided in advance.
